PortaCAT Industries is pleased to provide our clients with access to a range of techologies – and one the dovetails extremely well with the ‘toolbox’ approach is the Safer Power WoodScan®.
WoodScan® is a proven superior testing industry standard method compared with other industry methods (proven through industry trials since 1997). The system’s objective and measurable outputs provides our clients with unrivalled condition monitoring, analysis and advice. With the WoodScan® you can:
- Determine Serviceability and Health Index (HI)
- Monitor the condition of one asset, a group of assets or an entire asset population
- Provide a lineal rate of decay for the assessed asset
- Derive impact of additional loads on an existing asset
- Quantify risk and subsequently prioritise rectification schedules and budgets
The key components for the WoodScan® are the acousto-ultrasonic scanners, the pilodyn and the Woodscan® software. The scanning process uses 12 contact points around the pole resulting in 66 scans across the pole. At each of those points the scanner measures the propagation times of sonic pulses as they travel between the transmitting and receiving probes.
Any internal anomaly (i.e. degraded material) between the probes will attenuate the pulse. A defect increases the travel time for the pulse as compared to sound timber and this prompts the operator to identify this in the WoodScan® software.
Using the pilodyn allows for the measurement of depth penetration by striking a spring-loaded steel striker pin into the wood. A loss of diameter is calculated by comparing the reference depth with the ground line.
The overall result is plot of the individual scans mapped using complex algorithms within the WoodScan® software.
Combining the pilodyn measurements and asset information (including the load attributes) allows for the ratio versus load and the derived Health Index of the asset.
